Bandmaster® Limited is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of British cellist and composer Robin Stevens, who died on 16 February 2026, aged 67, following a period of illness.
Born in Newport, Wales, on 30 August 1958, Robin Stevens devoted his life to music with remarkable dedication and integrity. From his early studies at Dartington College and the Royal Northern College of Music, through postgraduate work at Birmingham University under composer John Joubert, to a prolific compositional career spanning nearly 180 works, Robin leaves behind an exceptional and wide-ranging musical legacy.
His output encompassed works for cello, violin, viola, chamber ensemble and orchestra, and his music has been recorded on the Prima Facie, Divine Art and Toccata Classics labels. Three further recordings of his complete orchestral music, due for release on Toccata Classics in 2026, will stand as a lasting tribute to the breadth and ambition of his creative vision.
Bandmaster is proud to have been entrusted with the publication of Robin’s brass band works, as featured on Tredegar Band’s recording Brass Odyssey – a bold and imaginative collection that showcases the depth, originality and expressive range of his writing for the medium. As Matthew Ruel of Bandmaster has noted: “His music combines structural integrity, emotional honesty and a rare originality of voice, qualities that will enrich the modern brass band repertoire for years to come.”
Robin’s autobiographical writings and catalogue of works, published on his own website (www.robinstevenscomposer.co.uk) in anticipation of this time, offer an invaluable introduction to his life and music for all who wish to know his work more deeply.
Our thoughts are with Robin’s family, friends, colleagues and all those whose lives were touched by his artistry. It was a privilege to work alongside him, and we remain committed to ensuring that his music reaches the audiences it so richly deserves.
