Elegy (Part I) is a substantial work in its own right. Predominantly slow and quiet, it is probing, even mystical in character, with expressive solos underpinned by searching, dissonant harmonies. In places the music assumes a processional quality, at times reminiscent of a funeral march or religious rite.
Structural cohesion is provided by a three-phrase chorale, which appears three times, and a mysterious fanfare that recurs five times. The final appearance of the fanfare forms the unmistakable climax of the movement, after which the music subsides into near silence.

£40.00Homage to Dufay is a quartet for two euphoniums and two basses, composed to mark the retirement of Dr David Fallows — the distinguished musicologist and specialist in the music of Guillaume Dufay — from Manchester University. As a tribute, the piece is written as a pastiche of the Franco-Flemish master’s style, with the occasional Modernist twist adding colour and wit.
The final section indulges in some playful musical word-play, being based on the well-known song “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” — or, more fittingly, “Fallows.”

£20.00Rondo alla Berserker is a striking solo work for trumpet / cornet that inhabits a very different world. Structurally straightforward — A–B–A–C–A — the ritornello ‘A’ sections feature a brash, jazzy theme built on lopsided additive rhythms. The sense of asymmetry continues into the ‘B’ section, a virtuosic moto perpetuo: fast but mostly quiet, with syncopated accents creating tension, excitement, and suspense.
After a reprise of the opening material, the ‘C’ section maintains the jazzy feel but introduces a more sensual, even raunchy element, before the final ritornello drives the solo to an appropriately frenzied climax.

£25.00Supplication is a duet for tuba and piano in which both performers share equal musical importance — a true partnership rather than a solo with accompaniment. Harmonically complex, the piece inhabits a mystical sound world reminiscent of middle-period Scriabin, and recalls some of the more atmospheric passages in Brass Odyssey.
Its various ideas undergo continuous variation and transformation, ensuring that despite the generally slow tempo, the music is never static. The work is cast in an arch form, building to a central climax before returning to the reflective mood of its opening.

£20.00Three-Way Conversation is a solo work for euphonium that depicts the interaction of three distinct characters: a pompous, overbearing Major-General (heard in wide leaps and martial rhythms at the opening); a browbeaten Private (expressed through sighing melodic lines, as if pleading for mercy); and an emollient Padre (represented by smooth repeated semiquavers, marked parlando – “as if spoken”).
As the piece unfolds, the Private grows bolder and more talkative, the Major-General begins to soften, and the Padre remains his calm, imperturbable self. Yet despite moments of resolution, an underlying uneasiness lingers at the close.
