Fantasia Drammatica is a powerful duet for two euphoniums that revisits the expressive and stylistic world of its close cousin, the French horn duet Cornutopia. Like the earlier work, it is a formidable tour de force — an intimidating prospect for all but the most accomplished of players.

Two distinctive compositional techniques feature prominently. Hocketing, a device borrowed from Renaissance composers, divides a rapid sequence of notes between two players to create a single, unbroken line. In contrast, catch-up counterpoint (the composer’s own term) has both instruments playing the same sequence of notes simultaneously: one begins more quickly and then slows down, while the other starts more slowly and then accelerates, so that they coincide only at the start and finish of the passage.

Perhaps this serves as a musical metaphor for any fruitful discussion between generous, open-hearted people.

  • Three-Way Conversation

    Three-Way Conversation (PDF)

    Three-Way Conversation is a solo work for euphonium that depicts the interaction of three distinct characters: a pompous, overbearing Major-General (heard in wide leaps and martial rhythms at the opening); a browbeaten Private (expressed through sighing melodic lines, as if pleading for mercy); and an emollient Padre (represented by smooth repeated semiquavers, marked parlando – “as if spoken”).

    As the piece unfolds, the Private grows bolder and more talkative, the Major-General begins to soften, and the Padre remains his calm, imperturbable self. Yet despite moments of resolution, an underlying uneasiness lingers at the close.
