Rondo alla Berserker is a striking solo work for trumpet / cornet that inhabits a very different world. Structurally straightforward — A–B–A–C–A — the ritornello ‘A’ sections feature a brash, jazzy theme built on lopsided additive rhythms. The sense of asymmetry continues into the ‘B’ section, a virtuosic moto perpetuo: fast but mostly quiet, with syncopated accents creating tension, excitement, and suspense.
After a reprise of the opening material, the ‘C’ section maintains the jazzy feel but introduces a more sensual, even raunchy element, before the final ritornello drives the solo to an appropriately frenzied climax.
